ABOUT US The overall aim and
mission of the Shilbottle Skills Centre is to provide the people of the
district with the opportunity to gain the skills they need to survive in
the 21st Century. ¨ The
Village of Shilbottle is situated in the heart Northumberland and was once
a thriving mining village. As with all mining communities in
Northumberland, Shilbottle has seen radical changes over the past few
years. The coalmines were not only part of community; in many cases they
were the heart of the community. Part of the community died when the mines
at Shilbottle closed, but there is still a strong community spirit in the
village, it just needed a focal point to build on, which the Centre has
helped to provide. ¨ In 1993 Leeds
Metropolitan University conducted a survey in Shilbottle on behalf of
Northumberland County Council. The study concluded that Shilbottle
desperately needed a Centre in the village to provide education, training
and employment support, as well as providing a resource for the whole
village. With lots of determination and hard work by the residents of
Shilbottle this Centre opened ¨ The Centre is a
community led project, which took six years to plan. By providing
facilities and the opportunities to improve their knowledge and skills we
hope the Skills Centre will make its contribution to the regeneration of
the village ¨ The
Centre The Centre has a
warm and friendly atmosphere and the staff are always available to discuss
the individual needs of all our clients. As well as a resource for the
whole village, the Centre also provides a variety of services. The Centre
boasts a state of the art IT suite with broadband Internet connection that
can be used for both leisure and more formal activities.
